Sharks and pencils

I began writing this book because I was excited to see how my life, career, travel adventures, and scuba diving experiences would look together. I am not sure if these things would still seem as exciting to me today as they did decades ago, as the world has expanded and possibilities have increased. However, I still hope that many will find it interesting and educational at times." It was clearly a difficult question how much one should delve into the past, since I was not proud of everything I had done.

Design

I was appointed as a lead designer for the development of the Ikarus 300 luxus coach family when I was 32 years old. I didn't have to give up my principles and, despite the impressive title, I remained responsible for myself. I was given a huge opportunity at one of the largest bus manufacturers in the world at the time. They produced 13,000 buses per year in the 11-12 meter and articulated categories, and tens of thousands of people worked in the background. I was able to make suggestions for the long-distance and tourist buses that would be manufactured in the future.

I'm not saying that it was a calm period, because if I had lost my chance, it would have hurt my career in the long run. At first, I "overshot" the mark a bit and my initial proposals were deemed very audacious, so I had to dial back my momentum. The later proposals were accepted. We introduced several new solutions, such as streamlined mirrors and new lamps that fit into the corner of the back wall, and these ideas then appeared in many Western buses later on. The design of the back wall was particularly valued, being titled "Europe's most beautiful bus back wall". We received a Design Award for it, and various models from the 300 series received numerous prestigious awards at both domestic and foreign exhibitions. My professional career was established for a lifetime, and in the following decades, I just had to "continue" it.

Diving

We had already "sunk" into the soft embrace of sleep when the first gusts of wind arrived from the north. Within minutes, the wind was almost howling. The sea was incredibly agitated and the huge white peaks of waves flashed like a row of teeth as they crashed against the side of the ship. Fortunately, the table had already been cleared, but rattling sounds coming from the kitchen left no doubt that there was no need to waste much water on washing dishes.

The ship leaned close to 45 degrees in both directions as the waves attacking from the north hit it hard on the side, while we had to maintain a west-southwest direction. It was astonishing how quickly the storm hit. Luckily, as usual, all our equipment was securely fastened. The spicy octopus in my stomach became very curious about what caused the great sway, but I had a hard time convincing it to stay put. Holding onto the column that supported the sunshade roof, I felt like we were going to capsize at any moment because I was swaying so much over the water. However, this made the special phenomenon visible to me, where thousands of glowing plankton emerged from the water displaced by the ship. Sadly, I couldn't enjoy the sight to the fullest because I had three plates of food in me more than I needed. Unfortunately, due to the darkness, I couldn't even resort to the basic trick: I couldn't see the only stable thing, the horizon.

Therefore, I stubbornly clung to what was already mine. A wave crashed over the side of the boat more and more frequently. Fortunately, the back of the diving deck was partly open, so the water that came up almost knee-high quickly flowed out as the boat rocked. We hoped that the engine compartment cover was well sealed, because if water gets in there, it can be a big problem. A motor shutdown due to an electrical short circuit in these circumstances could be fatal. After half an hour of circling around, we asked the owner somewhat shyly why we weren't turning back towards Sha'ab-Mahmud, where we could find shelter. He said he never interferes with his sailor's job, if he wants to go, then he's doing it right. We had a "slightly" different opinion, especially since the only navigation instrument was a faintly glowing compass.

"I was seemingly born under a very lucky star."

In the first sentence of the book, a statement meant to be humorous was taken seriously by fate: despite the many ups and downs, I believe it really happened this way!

About me

Ever since my early childhood, I have worn down thousands and thousands of pencils. What started as a hobby has become a profession that takes up a large part of my life. Thanks to this, I have spent countless hours in another world, underwater, where sharks have become my familiar companions. Mainly, I wanted to share the stories of these two worlds in my book, hoping that the many exciting tales and adventures will be interesting to others as well!
